<p>From outside of Hobart today at Port Arthur, South East of Hobart.</p>
<p>The Separate Prison at Port Arthur was a Model Prison for two reasons:</p>
<p>1. It was modeled on the experimental Pentonville Prison in London and featured similar conditions right down to the conditions and furnishings.</p>
<p>2. The principal of the Separate Prison was an advanced concept for its day and substituted silence for the lash, taught the imates useful trades and subjected convicts to the &#8220;moralising&#8221; influences of religion and was considered a &#8220;model&#8221; of instruction and reformation.</p>
