(c)hobartdaily.com - The Anzac day dawn service at the Hobart Cenotaph

Today’s shot is of the dawn service for Anzac day at the Hobart Cenotaph. Anzac Day marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by both Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. Anazac is an acroynm for Australian and new Zealand Army Corps and while the engagement itself on Gallipoli Peninsula quickly moved into statelmate and eventual retreat by the Anzacs it helped to forge the identities of the two young nations.

To set the mood a little better, a couple of music videos set around Australian Military Service.

Red Gum – I was only 19 (Vietnam)

Cold Chisel – Khe Sanh (Vietnam)

The Pogues – The band played waltzing matilda (World War I)
