A couple of Devils

I thought i might include a couple of young devils for today’s photo (they certainly look different from the Looney Tunes Version). Though it doesn’t look like it, these young ones are in deep trouble as are the rest of their species. Devil Facial Tumour Disease (DFTD) is sweeping through the wild population and in some areas like the East Coast it is estimated that up to 90% of the population has been killed and in 10 years, extinction in the wild. No one is exactly sure what is causing the disease and it is virtually unique being one of only two known types of communicable cancer and is usually fatal within three to eight months.
Various contingency plans have been put in place including capitive breeding programs at Zoos around Australia and larger enclosured reserves should the population need to be re-established in the future.
